Mr. President Alan García,

 
I am writing to express my deepest concern over the recent police attack on peaceful indigenous protesters in Bagua, northern Peru.  Eyewitness reports from the field indicate that the police attacked in the early morning, firing tear gas and live bullets that resulted in the deaths of both protesters and police officers.  I am strongly urging your administration to immediately stand down, refraining from using additional deadly force on indigenous demonstrators.

BAGUA, Peru - June 8 - In the aftermath of Friday's bloody raid on a peaceful indigenous road blockade near Bagua in the Peruvian Amazon, numerous eyewitnesses are reporting that the Special Forces of the Peruvian Police have been disposing of the bodies of indigenous protesters who were killed.

Dozens of people are estimated to have been killed in clashes between police and indigenous activists protesting oil and mining projects in the northern Peruvian Amazonian province of Bagua. Peruvian authorities have declared a military curfew, and troops are patrolling towns in the Amazon jungle. Authorities say up to twenty-two policemen have been killed, and two remain missing. The indigenous community says at least forty people, including three children, were killed by the police this weekend. [includes rush transcript]  Guest is Gregor MacLennan, Program Coordinator for Amazon Watch. He arrived in Bagua, the scene of this weekend's clashes, on Saturday.

Según información proveniente del país del Norte, el acto legislativo (Bill C 23) con el que se discutía su aprobación, fue retirado por el gobierno conservador de la actual agenda legislativa.

Opponents of the proposed Canada-Colombia Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA) celebrated a victory last week when the Conservative government removed Bill C-23 from the legislative agenda pending an independent human rights assessment. But with Colombian President Álvaro Uribe scheduled to visit Montreal on June 8, human rights activists say that the struggle is far from over.

El día 29 de mayo de 2009 fue asesinado el Dr. Manuel ARROYO GALVÁN maestro de la Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) e integrante del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores del Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (Conacyt). Fue fundador de la Organización Popular Independiente, Centros Comunitarios y el Consejo Ciudadano de Desarrollo Social, entre otras organizaciones, y preparaba un libro sobre las movilizaciones sociales, en especial las generadas en empresas maquiladoras, informaron sus compañeros y amigos.
